[essay]Use and abuse of leisure

Friday, July 31, 2009  at 5:30 PM

Leisure means free time away from routine work, which can be spent doing activities of hobbies, which one likes to do like i_leisurereading, hearing music, collecting stamps, gardening. Some misunderstand the meaning of leisure. For them it means whiling away time, roaming and wandering aimlessly, playing pranks etc. Leisure is a must to give a break to a dull routine. It is wrong to use holidays as working days.

People who don’t believe in leisure, suffer from boredom, tension or depression. Leisure doesn’t mean indulging in heavy activities and it also doesn't mean wastage of time.

Those who while away time are abusing leisure. They get into a lethargic mode and find it difficult to get out of it. Those who inculcate hobbies can wisely use their time and ensure their all round development.

By playing sports and doing physical activities we can be physically fit. Leisure activities should not be expensive and time consuming . They should not in any way hamper the peace and harmony of social life.

Leisure gives us the time to introspect and know ourselves. we can meditate and do yoga. Through introspection we will be able to know ourselves better and work towards our personal and spiritual growth. A person who doesn’t enjoy leisure amply supports the maxim – “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!”

[Essay] Should School bag be made lighter?

  at 3:39 PM

Every child going to school is physically harassed with the burden heavy school bag of carrying many books per subject. Their school bags run into kilos, weighing down their tiny backs and stunting their physical growth or giving them back and spine problems.

A committee headed by Prof. Yashpal brought out a report in 1933 A.D. stating the need for check on the curriculum load for school going children.

In their 12 point recommendation the committee stated that the pressure on students is worst when too much is taught just before the examinations.

There are too many textbooks, densely packed. The matter is written in convoluted language and teachers just skim through it to cover up the course on time.

Children fail to comprehend so they usually memorized and reproduce like parrots during the examination. This is not an enjoyable experience.

Subjects like mathematics, Social studies, Science, languages are taught in hurried manner so children are hardly able to follow them to develop a liking for them.

Usually when topics like grammar are taught, the tests are taken immediately but later the child has no recall value so he cuts a sorry figure where languages are concerned. Most of the students pass without understanding the subjects. All they have learnt is cramming. This problem can only be solved if study topics are backed with activities to be performed by the pupils and teachers as a group activity.

Topics need to be logically discussed in class by honing the students skills of curiosity and clear understanding. It is time we redefine our approach to education and its aim. Textbooks with errors should be immediately pulled out of circulation and students should not be made into confused bundles who don’t know what to do – score well by cramming wrong things or have the guts to write the wrong things at the cost of marks in the examinations.

The students bags need to be made lighter but their brains need to be made more fertile and developed.

[Essay] Earn while you learn

Wednesday, July 29, 2009  at 5:27 PM

Earn while you learn / craze for professional coursesearn-while-you-learn

In this competitive world students find themselves at crossroads due to a faulty system of education. Instead of going for regular studies of graduation and post graduation, students prefer to go in for short term professional courses so that they can start earning at a young age.

There are professional courses like multimedia, computers, fashion, designing, BPO training, secretarial practice, accounting, taxation etc.

Even employers prefer to take in students of professional background because they require less training and can be moulded for work immediately.

The professional courses are expensive yet they are very sought after and even parent support their wards, opting for professional courses.

However, institutions meting out the professional course are proliferating by the dozens but they lack expertise and infrastructure.

Some of their curriculum is run-of-the-mill kind so students don’t benefit much. However, with an increase in inflation most of the students are forced to earn so they can support themselves and spend for their future studies. It makes them more confident and they become financially  independent.

The education system needs to be revamped so that students can learn to choose a proper career right from their school days and confidently go into the line of profession they like.

[Essay] Books – our best friends

  at 2:37 PM

The poet Robert Southey has beautifully called books his never books our best friendsfailing friends with whom he converses  day by day. Books are true friends they can be by our side in whatever mood we are. They enlighten, give knowledge, entertain and inform us. Books are written with experienced people so we learn from their lives. We can carry books with us when we travel. They are our constant companions. when we are tired of reading we can close them, we can even read them at midnight. They fill our minds and hearts with hope and joy. Unlike human friends they never deceive or betray us. Books have inspired people through the ages. The first book of the Aryan called the Rigveda has a lot for us to learn and understand even after 3000 years. Books like the Ramayana and Mahabharat are relevant in modern times and teach people the ways of life. Writers like Gandhi have put forward to us their life on a platter to understand their goals and teachings.

When we read books, we are in the company of the best and the noblest minds of all ages. They enrich our minds by providing us with knowledge and widen the frontiers of our imagination.

Books play important role in influencing our character and personality. A man is known by the company he keeps so it is necessary to pick the right books. Reading is a habit and one should cultivate since childhood. It is the best leisure time activity – one must slowly graduate from picture comics, fairy tales, detective and romance stories to good literature.

But one must have a proper choice of books to read. This will depend on our temperament and tastes. Today there is a lot of trash, sex and violence depicted in books. They also encourage criminal activities so care should be taken while choosing books to read.

Books also need to be taken care of – one must avoid folding pages, loosening the rib, marking pages in somebody else’s books or tearing pages from library books. Books are written on different topics like history, geography, science, philosophy, religion. One must treat them as a window to the world which give us the right glimpse of life.

Students of today have a heavy schedule in school and have no extra time to read. The school authorities should inculcate the habit of reading because books are for the people, of the people and by the people. They act as our philosophers and guides. Cultivate a habit for reading it is good for all.

[Essay] is Ragging Right?

Tuesday, July 28, 2009  at 7:03 PM

Ragging means teasing in a light vein, cracking jokes but not at the expense of others. Ragging is fun if done in the right spirit.

Traditionally it is meant to break the ice between the new and the old students and to encourage better co-operation among the students.

Usually innocent ragging involves seniors making the freshers dance, sing songs, enact somethings or run errands for them. Ragging has to be done in the right spirit and in no way should it physically or mentally harass anyone.

But now its taking an ugly turn as freshers are building up "ragging phobia". The modern trend of ragging is obnoxious. Students are sexually exploited or mentally harassed. They are made to do indecent things like removing their clothes or doing sexual overtures.

Ragging should not go to an extent where students take extreme steps out of embarrassment. Many students leave studies or even go to extent of committing suicide out of utter shame and bad name. Steps should be taken that seniors do not use political clout and make ragging a menace .

The government needs to pass legislation against indecent ragging. Actually ragging should be abolished and a new system like gandhigiri should be used to welcome the freshers.

[Essay] if there were no examinations

  at 3:31 PM

Examinations are a tool to assess the students' calibre in a certain class and to promote them to a higher class. how ever students are morally scared of examinations - they build a phobia about examinations.

The whole career of the students depends on the exams. A students may be a good student but due to some circumstances like 1ll-health or lack of time for preparation of exams he/she may not be able to fare well, then the student's career is at stake.

students have a sigh of relief when the exams are over they feel that they have come through an ordeal.

One cannot truly judge the calibre of a student through a short examination. Scientist like Einstein failed in their examinations too but went on to become successful people.

Assessment on the teacher's part is also not faultless. Many teachers who are not capable are given the work of assessment. Their lack of knowledge can cause problems for students.

Sometimes the papers leak out or a lot of partiality is shown to certain students. Examinations kill the student's genuine interest in study and importance is given to cramming. Hence exams are of chance and guessing games.

However, examinations are a necessary evil as they are the only tool to evaluate a student to give him/her the required promotion for further studies.

In the absence of examination, all educational activities would slow down, there would be no reliable system of testing and assessment and there would be all-round deterioration in educational efforts and standards.

If there were no examinations majority majority of students would not bother to study at all. Bright and sincere students would get lost among the lazy masses. We would never be able to separate the brilliant students from the dullards.

We have to ward off the problems and make an examination system that is fair and welcome to the students, that encourages them towards evaluation and one that makes the education system an honest one.

[Essay] Should there be sex education in schools ?

Monday, July 13, 2009  at 10:46 PM
Sexuality is a very sensitive and subject and every government treads cautiously in talking about it or including it in the curriculum of school books. Children are however, exposed to a lot of sex and violence on television and in movies.

Some of them are brought up with misconceptions and they cultivate unhealthy attitude towards the subject.

There is an alarming spread of sex-related diseases like AIDS and many young men and women are becoming victims.

Most youngsters consider it as taboo to talk about sex with their peers or parents and prefer to get information from friends.

Parents also avoid discussing the topic but they would never stop from scolding their children unnecessarily if something went wrong.

Indecent literature and curiosity pave the way for wrong ideas and experiments with sex among youngsters.

Answer to children's curiosity about sex should be objectively given instead of ignoring the facts and bypassing the subject.

Children are becoming the victims of rape and indecent sexual overtures from people.

If a scientific and objective manner is employed to impart sex education it will make the youth more alert, aware and less vulnerable.

Sex Education imparted in a callous and wrong manner may have disastrous results and may lead to more amorous behaviour. Proper qualified teachers are required to treat this delicate subject with care.

[essay] Role of teacher in moulding a student's life

  at 9:41 PM
Teachers takes the place of parents in a school, they guide and mould the character and personality of the student.

They influence the formative years of the students. A good teacher coaxes and helps a student to understand his abilities and become a better human being.

The children look up to their teachers so it is very easy to mould them to divert their attention to things which are constructive.

Students are going to be the future citizen of the country- so it is the duty of the teacher to harness their capabilities in making the future of country bright.

To be a role model a teacher should learn to appreciate studies themselves, then only can they make the students appreciate the importance of education and knowledge in their lives.

Unsure teachers only teach for money. They destroy the growth of students and cannot be role models. Teachers should not consider teaching to be a money spinning business. They should understand that they are in a noble profession and the growth and development of many lives depends on them.

If wrongly influenced the students turn out to have mob mentality but on other hand good teachers bring out the best in students. They help them decide their aim in life.

They help them to choose their profession and become successful in life. Students carry on the torch lit by their teachers and they follow the footsteps of their peers and they will leave behind their footsteps for others to follow
